Don’t let the delicate looks fool you. Hellebores are tough, shade-loving perennials that come into their own in the depths of Winter. Commonly called Winter Roses, they’re not actually roses but they more than earn the nickname with their elegant, long-lasting blooms and cold-season charm.

There are dozens of species and hybrids but the most commonly grown in Australian gardens are hybrids from Helleborus orientalis, often called Lenten Roses.

Hellebores description
Hellebores hail from shady woodlands and mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, where they’re well acquainted with chilly winters and dappled light. That’s good news for Aussie gardeners in cool to temperate climates with a shady spot to fill.
Hellebores have leathery, divided foliage and grow to around 50cm high x 50cm wide. They flower in late Autumn to early Spring, right when most of your garden is looking a bit underwhelming. The blooms linger for weeks, even months and their petals (technically sepals) often age gracefully into deeper hues.
There are a wide variety of flower colours available including cream, blush, dusky pink, plum, burgundy, lime, near-black and everything in between. Blooms can be single, double, speckled, frilly or star-shaped and some even have a charming freckled face or marbled foliage.
Climate
Temperate and cool climates. They’ll struggle in the tropics and dislike hot, humid Summers.
Plant cultivation & care
Plant in a dappled shade or morning sun/afternoon shade position. Too much sun and they sulk, too little and they fade into the background. Ensure soil is moist but well-drained, with loads of organic matter. Slightly alkaline is ideal.
Keep up the water in dry periods, especially in late Summer and Autumn when buds are forming. Once established, they’re fairly tolerant but never fond of drying out completely. Mulch annually to keep moisture in and soil temp stable.
Divide every few years if clumps get too crowded (though they’re not huge fans of being uprooted – move them only if you must).

Under deciduous trees, shrubberies, cut flowers, shade gardens, cold climates, mass planted, borders
Pruning
Tidy up old foliage in late Autumn before new flowers emerge, this helps show off the blooms and reduce fungal issues.
Pests & diseases
Watch for aphids and black spot but otherwise they’re fairly resilient.
