Oyster Plant description
Acanthus mollis is a fast growing plant which forms a rosette, clumping habit. Native to the Mediterranean and Africa, this evergreen perennial grows to approximately 1m x 1m.
The large, dark green, deeply serrated leaves sit below striking, erect spikes of purple and white flowers from November to February. These spikes can be up to 2m tall and are quite the show.
Interestingly, the leaves of this plant were used as a decoration motif on the capitals of Greek Corinthian columns.
Climate
All climate zones with the exception of dry inland areas.
Plant cultivation and care
Best suited to part shade in a soil rich in organic matter. The Oyster Plant tolerates a variety of soils from quite dry to quite damp. Be sure to mulch well.
The seed pods can scatter seed over a significant area. Combine this with the fact that the rhizomes will take root very easily if in contact with the soil and you can have a plant that can get away from you.
Can be propagated via seed, division or leaf cuttings.
Plant use
Under trees, pots, borders, cottage gardens, for foliage, moist areas
Pruning
Remove dead leaves and spent flower stems.
Pests and diseases
Snails, slugs and various caterpillars.
