Common name

Geebung, Golden Lantern, Snotty Gobbles (so I’m told)

Golden Lantern plant description

Persoonia ‘Golden Lantern’ is a low growing Australian native shrub. It has attractive dark green, lanceolate leaves attached to lovely contrasting magenta stems. It grows to 1m in height by 1.5m in width.

In Summer through to Autumn, Golden Lantern is covered in small golden yellow, tubular flowers. As they age, the anther tips turn to a soft cream colour as the petals peel back.

Interesting fact… the Persoonia genus was named after Christiaan Hendrik Persoon (1761-1836), a South African botanist.

Climate

Sub-tropical, Warm temperate

Plant cultivation & care

Persoonia ‘Golden Lantern’ requires a full sun to dappled shade position in very well drained soil. It thrives in dry gardens where not a lot of water is available.

Feed with a native fertiliser once a year in Spring.

Persoonias are notoriously difficult to propagate. Hormone treatment of cuttings appeared to assist in striking as has grafting but success is quite limited.

Plant use

Native gardens, rockeries, screens, low hedge, dry gardens

Pruning

Give this shrub a cut back after flowering to encourage a dense, bushy growth habit.
